Following the Trails of the Austro-Hungarian Military Railway

Exploring small villages, nature and typical karst landscape through a rough terrain, criss-crossed by trails along the deserted Austro-Hungarian railway

A special experience is guaranteed, if you embark on a bike journey over the Slovenian-Italian border, which was one of the most protected borders in this part of Europe only twenty years ago. Now, as the borders have disappeared, this region has become a genuine heaven for mountain cyclists from either side of the border. On the way to Debela griža and Redipuglia we can have a look at the remains from World War I, tunnels and caverns. On the Slovenian side we will enjoy and marvel the size of the Tower of Cerje and then climb up to the viewpoint Trstelj (643m). After descending we will ride across 22-km long trails of the Austro-Hungarian military railway. The train that rolled down this track, the so-called »B-Zug«, was constructed by the famed constructor Ferdinand Porsche. Cycling in these areas leaves no one feeling indifferent. The beauty of the scenery can be admired in any season, but something particularly magical happens in autumn, when Miss Nature puts on a red smoke bush dress.

Length: 60 – 80 km, 5 – 7 hours
